Fuel.Ventures, a newly formed fund led by one of Europe’s leading technology entrepreneurs and investors, Mark Pearson (pictured), partnered with Europe’s leading equity crowdfunding platform Seedrs to give everyday investors access to a pipeline of high growth European e-commerce start-ups. International investment bank Altium has had a strong start to 2015, advising on 26 deals worth GBP5.4 billion. The first half has seen a team, led by CEO Phil Adams, advise on the GBP1.9 billionn sale of UK retail business New Look to South African investment company Brait. Altium also acted as adviser to CVC Capital Partners on the purchase of Douglas, Europe’s leading specialist retailer of beauty and personal care products, with revenues of circa GBP1.8 billion.   The firm’s UK offices were very active during the period, completing nine deals. In this extract from the Preqin Quarterly Update: Hedge Funds, Q2 2015, we take a look at recent industry performance using the latest data available. Q2 2015 was a volatile quarter for hedge funds but still broadly positive with hedge funds (+1.45 per cent) outperforming the S&P 500 (-0.03 per cent) for the second consecutive quarter. CTAs, however, had a difficult quarter, returning -3.92 per cent for Q2 2015 as many trends reversed during the quarter along with the ongoing negotiations regarding Greek debt and extraordinary volatility in the Chinese public markets, leading to many CTAs giving back much of their strong performance generated through Q1 2015. Preqin’s Real Estate Online provides comprehensive information on 76 institutional investors based in Chicago that actively invest in real estate, which collectively represent over USD57 billion invested in the asset class. Venable has co-advised, with Canadian business firm McMillan LLP, client PlentyOfFish Media, Inc on its sale to the Match Group, a subsidiary of IAC, for USD575 million in cash. BaltCap has sold its 48 per cent shareholding in the Latvian moulded fibre manufacturing company VLT Ltd. BaltCap invested in the company back in 2004 to finance two rounds of expansion of production capacity. While post crisis economic environment proved challenging to sustain growth of the company, the moulded fibre packaging producer maintained solid profitability, acquired new export markets and solidified its market position in Eastern Europe.   The shareholding was sold to one of the founders of the business. The parties have agreed not to disclose details of the transaction.
