Lightyear Capital and the management of property specialist ING Clarion Partners, have reached agreement with ING Group to acquire the US-based real estate firm. Lightyear is a leading New York-based private equity firm focused on financial services investing.
Founded in 1982, Clarion Partners has broad market reach in the Americas, with more than 250 employees in major markets throughout the US and a presence in Mexico and Brazil. With assets of more than USD22 billion, Clarion manages private equity real estate across a broad range of products and strategies for institutional and individual investors.

Maven Capital Partners has been awarded the contract to manage Bluehone AiM VCT2 plc (Bluehone), which previously merged with Bluehone AiM VCT plc in July 2008. The appointment consolidates a notable few months for the Maven team, which has also recently announced its selection by the Scottish Investment Bank as manager to the Scottish Loan Fund, and in November 2010 was named Small Buyout House of the Year 2010 at the unquote British Private Equity awards.

HarbourVest Global Private Equity Limited’s estimated Economic Net Asset Value has risen to USD809.5 million or USD9.75 per share, as at 31 January 2011, a 1.0% increase from the 31 December 2010 estimated Economic NAV per share of USD9.65.
This change was driven by foreign currency movement (approximately USD0.05 per share); increases in value for privately-held companies as preliminary year-end 2010 results were received (USD0.05 per share); and increases in the value of publicly-traded holdings to 31 January (USD0.02 per share). The Council of Ministers has announced that Jersey is to maintain its zero-ten tax regime, following a recent review by the EU Code of Conduct Group and High Level Working Party.
Concerns over deemed distribution and attribution rules were raised by the EU, and the decision has been taken to remove these provisions with effect from January 2012.

Point Capital Partners and Forstmann & Co have signed a definitive agreement to form Point Capital – Forstmann & Co, LLC (PCF). The combined entity will leverage each firm’s existing personnel and assets in order to create a dynamic platform engaged in: liquid asset management, structured financial products, investment banking and brokerage, and private equity investments.
PCF’s merged capabilities will benefit entrepreneurs and small businesses through direct investment, and/or capital formation and advisory services.

This includes close-to-home collection and recovery of consumer and transport packaging materials, as well as eco-friendly, cost-efficient recycling of used electrical equipment and facility waste disposal services. DSD is also one of Europe’s largest raw materials trading companies. In 2010, DSD generated revenues of over EUR600 million.

Micro-market, private equity firm Evolution Capital Partners has appointed Gene Marino to its team as a partner. Effective 1 March, Marino will open Evolution’s Chicago office, where he will focus on sourcing new investment opportunities, join the board of existing Evolution portfolio companies and continue to build the Evolution brand in the Chicago region.
"Hiring Gene and opening a Chicago office will reinforce our presence in the Chicago market, as we already have several portfolio companies there," says Jeffrey Kadlic, a Managing Partner at Evolution.

Channel Islands-based law firm Bedell Cristin is hoping the opening of a new office in Mauritius will open doors to emerging markets in Asia and Africa, following changes in the law of the Indian Ocean island nation that have allowed Bedell to establish the office in partnership with local lawyers.
Mauritius’ tax treaties – notably with India and China – plus its stability as a jurisdiction make it an increasingly important conduit for investment in emerging markets, according to Mark Helyar (pictured), a group partner and head of Bedell’s Guernsey office.

The recovery in emerging market private equity activity has outpaced the global industry, led by a significant 30% increase in capital invested in 2010 versus the prior year. According to the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA), 856 private equity and venture capital deals valued at USD28.8 billion were completed in 2010 across the emerging markets, driven by an increase in deal volume (27%) coupled with a slight uptick in median deal sizes (12%).
