Private equity firm The Carlyle Group and RPK Capital Management, an aircraft leasing and investment company, have formed a partnership to invest USD600m in equity in a spectrum of commercial aviation assets, including aircraft, engines and related securities and loans.
With leverage, the new partnership, RPK Capital Partners, is expected to purchase well over USD1bn in aviation assets.
The equity comes from Carlyle Partners V, Carlyle Strategic Partners II, RPK principals and other investors.

Axa Private Equity has acquired a USD1.9bn portfolio of limited partnership interests in private equity funds from Bank of America.
Axa says this represents one of the largest secondary private equity transactions in history.
The portfolio strengthens Axa Private Equity’s position in the US and adds to a series of private equity transactions the company has negotiated around the globe in April totalling more than USD2.6bn.

Law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft has appointed Drew G. L. Chapman, an alternative investment, asset management and securities industry attorney, as partner in the corporate department.
Chapman will reside in the New York office.

Amonix, a designer and manufacturer of concentrated photovoltaic solar power systems, has raised a USD129.4m series B financing round led by Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers.
Other participants in the round include Adams Street Partners, Angeleno Group, PCG Clean Energy & Technology Fund, Vedanta Capital, New Silk Route, The Westly Group, and current investor MissionPoint Capital Partners.
Amonix will use the proceeds to accelerate deployments of its CPV systems and expand manufacturing capacity.

Association of Investment Company figures show that GBP340m was raised by the venture capital trust sector during the 2009-2010 tax year, more than double the GBP158m raised in the 2008-2009 tax year.
The figure is the fourth highest amount since VCTs were first launched in 1995.

MMC Ventures has invested growth capital to accelerate the expansion of Creativity Software, a supplier of end-to-end location based services solutions to mobile network operators.
Creativity Software is one of the few providers of an LBS one stop shop suite of network infrastructure, middleware and end user applications, enabling mobile network operators to deploy revenue generating location-aware services.
MMC will take a significant minority stake as part of the transaction.
Creativity Software has experienced rapid growth throughout the recession and is now poised to increase its share of the growing market for products based on location information.

Wheb Ventures, a European clean technology private equity firm, has completed the fourth closing of its second clean technology fund, Wheb Ventures Private Equity Fund 2 at GBP100.3m (EUR114m or USD153m).
Wheb has so far attracted support from family offices and financial institutions and will hold the fund’s final closing at the end of May 2010.
The fund’s new commitments include one from HPE Environmental Innovation Fund, managed by Hermes. Hermes was selected to be one of the fund of funds managers of the UK Innovation Investment Fund which was established in January this year to invest in low
Sedgwick Claims Management Services, a US-based provider of insurance claims administration services, has agreed to be acquired by private equity firms Stone Point Capital and Hellman & Friedman for USD1.1bn (EUR816m).
Sedgwick is currently controlled by US title insurer Fidelity National Financial, leveraged buyout specialist Thomas H. Lee Partners, Evercore Capital Partners and other shareholders.
Fidelity National says it anticipates to book net proceeds of USD220m from the sale of its 32 per cent stake in Sedgwick.
Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Barclays Capital have committed to provide financing for the deal.
GE Antares Capital, a unit of GE Capital, has served as administrative agent for a senior secured credit facility in conjunction with the acquisition of Caravan Trading by Sterling Foods, an existing portfolio company of TGF Management and Austin Ventures.
Proceeds of the new facility were used to finance the acquisition, refinance Sterling’s existing senior credit facility and to provide for general ongoing working capital needs.
GE Capital Markets served as lead arranger and sole bookrunner on the transaction.
