OrbiMed expands private equity team

OrbiMed, an investment management firm focused on the healthcare sector, has appointed Vince Burgess, Peter Thompson and Joseph Zakrewski as venture partners and Alexander Cooper as general counsel.

Burgess, Thompson and Zakrewski will collaborate with OrbiMed’s team of approximately 40 investment professionals to invest in healthcare companies across all stages of development.

Cooper will be responsible for leading OrbiMed’s legal and compliance affairs.

Burgess (pictured) brings over 20 years of experience in healthcare operations, business development and venture capital investment to OrbiMed. Burgess was on the founding executive team at Volcano, where he was group president, advanced imaging systems, and also led global marketing and business development from 2002 to 2010. Previously, he served as a general partner of San Diego-based Sorrento Ventures, focusing on the firm’s healthcare investments.

Thompson brings over 20 years of industry experience to OrbiMed. He co-founded Trubion Pharmaceuticals and served as chief executive and chairman from its inception through its IPO on Nasdaq and as a public company until his retirement in 2009. Thompson is the former vice president and general manager of Chiron Informatics and held various executive positions at Becton Dickinson, including vice president, research and technology department of BD Bioscience.

Zakrzewski was most recently the president and chief executive officer of Xcellerex, a privately held company focusing on commercialising its proprietary next generation manufacturing technology for biotherapeutics and vaccines. Zakrzewski also served as the chief operating officer of Reliant Pharmaceuticals, a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on cardiovascular drugs. Reliant Pharmaceuticals was sold to GlaxoSmithKline in 2007.

Cooper joins OrbiMed from Goldman Sachs, where he served as counsel primarily in the asset management business and also in the corporate governance group. Prior to Goldman Sachs, he was an attorney at Davis Polk & Wardwell in the investment management group and litigation department.
