Outsourced solutions for private credit fund managers

PARTNER CONTENT

Aztec Group caters for the fund administration and structuring needs of many leading private credit fund managers. Kevin Hogan, Head of Fund Services Ireland and Group Head of Private Credit, highlights some of the current challenges facing managers and how Aztec’s expertise and investment in technology can help them meet those challenges…

How is the shifting interest rate outlook affecting the private credit market?

The shifting interest rate environment, after many years of low rates, raises several questions about the consequences, including: How should we stress test and forecast future scenarios? Will rates decrease swiftly if inflation is controlled, or will they remain elevated for an extended period? Regardless of the perspective, there is a clear requirement for data, analysis, predictive models and exposure reporting. The market is anxious, and considerations regarding returns, defaults, risks and other factors are at the forefront of all investment managers’ and regulators’ minds.

How is intensifying regulatory scrutiny affecting the private credit market?

The boom of private equity activity over the last decade, propelled by an ultra-low interest rate environment and a credit crunch that paved the way for alternative financing solutions, has led to a significant rise in private credit. Consequently, regulatory scrutiny of the private markets industry is understandably intensifying. Striking a balance between the evident advantages of additional regulation and the funds’ need for cost-efficient and agile manouvering presents a considerable challenge. Bank of England regulator Rebecca Jackson recently underscored the risks associated with transparency and exposure to private markets activity in the economy. Whether or not one agrees with the regulator’s stance, it’s hard to dispute that the general sentiment indicates a move towards more stringent regulations in the coming years. This trend is likely to be consistent across various regulators, who are known to consult with one another.

How are firms navigating overwhelming data flows and requirements?

Firms are proactively advancing beyond the data requirements to anticipate, understand and leverage collective insights on addressing the challenge of data management. Many are looking to their service providers for their expertise and insight, who are rightly expected to be at the forefront of devising solutions for this critical issue.

At Aztec Group, our strategic investments in technology have streamlined processes, enhancing efficiency and client service. Our Loan Service Unit, for example, offers real-time information on portfolio performance for private credit funds, which has been warmly received by clients.

What can firms do to position themselves for these changes?

Firms are already grappling with the substantial burden of reporting and are aware that any changes or additions to these requirements can significantly increase the workload for their teams. To position themselves effectively for these impending changes, firms must be aware of upcoming requirements and the heightened levels of regulatory scrutiny and transparency reporting that will be demanded of them in the future. Strategic planning is essential to determine how these requirements can be met and to prepare the necessary resources to fulfil them. Often, enlisting partners such as administrators to leverage their authoritative records can be a strategic move, potentially alleviating a considerable amount of effort and mitigating challenges.

What role does technology play here?

Technology is the only way forward for our industry, serving as the critical route to managing ever-increasing data demands. The complexity of aggregating, authenticating and formatting data from diverse sources requires advanced solutions. The capabilities of a data lake, coupled with flexible development functionalities, are key.
