Paul Weiss adds three Weil partners to private equity team in New York

Paul Weiss is expanding its private equity practice in New York with the hire of three Weil partners, who will join former Weil private equity co-head Chris Machera at the firm, according to a report by the Global Legal Post.

Private equity M&A partner Timothy Burns, tax partner Noah Beck and executive compensation partner Amanda Rotkel are expected to join Paul Weiss in the coming weeks, alongside two associates.

Machera moved to Paul Weiss in New York at the end of August. The group has advised a broad range of private equity clients in recent years, including Blackstone, CVC Capital Partners, Goldman Sachs Asset Management and TPG.

Paul Weiss chair Scott Barshay said the team would strengthen the firm’s focus on advising private equity clients on major transactions.

The appointments come amid a series of senior departures from Weil, a firm with about 1,200 lawyers. Earlier this month, Weil corporate department chair Michael Aiello announced plans to move to Cravath, Swaine & Moore with five M&A partners.

Sullivan & Cromwell has also recruited senior Weil lawyers, including London co-managing partner David Avery-Gee and corporate partner Sarah Flaherty. The firm has been expanding its London corporate and private equity capabilities through a series of lateral hires.

Several Weil partners have also moved to Simpson Thacher & Bartlett this year, including US private funds co-head Stephanie Srulowitz and GP stakes and investment management partner Andrew Nichol, both in New York.
