Warburg Pincus adds managing director to Asia team

Global private equity firm Warburg Pincus has announced that Leo Puri will join the firm as a managing director on April 10, initially based in the firm’s New York office and subsequently in its office in Mumbai.

According to Warburg Pincus, Puri will be working actively to help expand the firm’s business in India and will assist in building the firm’s financial services investment activities in selected markets in Asia.

Says Warburg Pincus co-president Charles R. Kaye: ‘We are delighted to welcome Leo to our team. India is a high priority market for our firm and his deep expertise in financial services and broad India experience will be of great value to our firm.’

Adds Rajesh Khanna, head of Warburg Pincus India: ‘We have a long investment history in India and a strong track record, and we are pleased to attract talent of this calibre.’

Before joining Warburg Pincus, Puri was a director of McKinsey in India and a co-leader of the financial services practice in Asia, advising banks, insurance and asset management companies and financial regulators on a variety of business strategy and organisational issues in Europe, the US and recently south-east Asia, India and the Middle East. He also advised leading Indian corporations on issues relating to growth and restructuring.

Warburg Pincus has been a private equity investor since 1971 and currently has approximately USD15bn in assets under management for investment in sectors including energy, consumer and retail, industrial, business services, healthcare, financial services, real estate, technology, media and telecommunications.

Since its entry into India more than a decade ago, the firm has invested more than USD1.4bn in companies including Kotak Mahindra Bank, Max India, Bharti, Nicholas Piramal India, Sintex, Writers and Publishers and WNS Global Services. Warburg Pincus has offices in Beijing, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, London, Menlo Park, Mumbai, New York, Shanghai and Tokyo.
