Carlyle agrees exit from Romanian gas producer BSOG

Carlyle Group and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have agreed to sell Black Sea Oil & Gas (BSOG), a Romanian offshore gas producer supplying around 10% of the country’s gas needs, to Mazarine Energy, according to a report by Reuters.

Financial terms were not disclosed. The transaction, which remains subject to regulatory approval, will transfer ownership to a former Carlyle portfolio company with oil and gas operations in Tunisia, Romania and the Netherlands.

Carlyle established BSOG in 2015, with the EBRD acquiring a minority stake two years later. The company began production in 2022, launching Romania’s first offshore Black Sea gas project in three decades.

Bob Maguire, co-head of Carlyle International Energy Partners, said the firm continued to assess opportunities across both upstream and downstream energy businesses. BSOG said the ownership transition demonstrated continued international investor confidence in Romania’s strategically important energy assets.
