Growth equity firm General Atlantic has appointed Dr. Ronald McMahan, founder of Global Energy Decisions and senior vice president at IHS, as a special adviser to the firm.
McMahan will provide strategic counsel to GA and its portfolio companies with a focus on GA’s energy and resources sector.
Founded in 1980, GA is active in the energy and resources sector, identifying and investing in businesses that facilitate the transformation of global supply and demand infrastructure of critical resources.
GA’s recent investments in the sector include Asian Genco, an energy and resources company providing power in India, and Gavilon, a provider of merchandising and distribution for agriculture and energy resources.
GA’s special adviser network consists of several experienced industry executives who work closely with GA’s investment professionals in identifying new opportunities as well as providing strategic advice and guidance to GA and its portfolio companies.

McMahan currently serves as senior vice president for strategic initiatives for IHS, a source of critical information and insight, and as a member of the company’s advisory board.
In 2002, McMahan founded Global Energy Decisions to provide a broad range of business solutions to the energy industry, from upstream through operations, trading, transmission, and distribution. In 2007, Global Energy Decisions was acquired by Ventyx, a business solutions provider to global energy, utility, communications, and other asset-intensive organisations.
