H Jeffrey Leonard elected as new EMPEA Chairman

The Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA) has announced the election of H Jeffrey Leonard, President, CEO and Founding Partner of the Global Environment Fund (GEF), as the next Chairman of the association. Leonard was unanimously elected by the EMPEA Board to a two-year term commencing in May 2011.

Leonard succeeds outgoing Chairman Roger Leeds, one of the founders of the organisation, who in his capacity as Chair since 2004 has helped to build EMPEA into the leading global organisation supporting the development private equity and venture capital industries in emerging economies.

”With EMPEA now on a solid footing and poised for even greater growth, I felt it was the right time to step aside and support a transition to new Board leadership,” says Leeds on his decision not to run for re-election to the chairmanship position.

Sarah Alexander (pictured), EMPEA President and CEO, says: “Roger Leeds played a critical role in conceiving of and establishing EMPEA, recruiting a world-class Board of Directors and early members that gave the organisation the legitimacy and financial base to support its growth. I know I speak for the entire Board and membership in saying how deeply grateful we are for his service and dedication over the past seven years as Chair."

Elected to the EMPEA Board in 2005, Leonard has been an active member of the Executive Committee and co-chair of the Membership Committee. GEF is a leading global private equity firm active across the emerging markets, with more than USD1 billion in assets under management dedicated to investments in clean technology, energy and natural resources. Emerging markets have been core to GEF’s business, with investments in Brazil, India, China, Central Europe, South Asia, and Africa since the 1990s.
