John Harley has been appointed global private equity leader for Ernst & Young.

Harley (pictured) joined Ernst & Young in 2000 to lead its global technology, communications and entertainment (TCE) corporate finance practice. Subsequent roles within Ernst & Young have included the head of its TCE European practice and global vice chair of accounts, industries and business development.

His current position is head of private equity for Europe, Middle East, India and Africa. He is also leading the Ernst & Young response to proposed European Commission regulation of the sector.

Steve Almassy, global vice chair, office of the chairman accounts and industry, says: "John brings an outstanding depth of knowledge and experience to this role. This will be invaluable as we continue to develop our private equity capabilities."

Harley says: "With USD1trn of committed capital to invest, private equity continues to have a pivotal role in the global financial system. This is despite the current lack of liquidity, which is forcing firms to do fewer deals and to turn their attention toward improving the performance of their portfolios. Our global private equity practice helps organisations respond to these pressures on a worldwide basis by helping them to conserve cash, control costs and achieve their strategic, long-term objectives."
