Yale University’s endowment generated a 26.3% investment return in the financial year ended 30 June 2026, increasing its assets by $11.3bn to a record $54.5bn, according to a report by Bloomberg.
The performance represents a significant improvement for the university’s investment portfolio, which pioneered an allocation model built around substantial exposure to private equity, venture capital and other alternative assets. Yale did not disclose the individual investments or asset classes responsible for the latest gains.
The return reportedly exceeded the approximately 19% median recorded by US university endowments managing at least $500m, although it trailed the 27.4% and 27.1% returns reported by the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University, respectively.
Yale’s annualised return over the past decade stands at 11.7%. Despite the strong performance, the university reportedly expects to incur approximately $900m in tax liabilities under the increased 8% federal tax on endowment investment income, with annual costs projected at around $350m in subsequent years.
