Despite the flux in many African markets over the past few years, the number of PE-backed IPOs in both African and global stock exchanges has remained relatively constant. Over the 2010-2017 period, PE-backed IPOs generated over USD3 billion, contributing 16 per cent in terms of volume and 23 per cent in terms of value to total IPOs.
That’s according to the African Private Equity and Venture Capital Association’s (AVCA) first report, in conjunction with PwC, analysing IPOs of African Private Equity (PE) portfolio companies on African and international stock exchanges.

Adobe (Nasdaq: ADBE) is to acquire Marketo, a specialist cloud platform for B2B marketing engagement, in a USD4.75 billion deal, subject to customary purchase price adjustments.
With nearly 5,000 customers, Marketo brings together planning, engagement and measurement capabilities into an integrated B2B marketing platform. Adding Marketo’s engagement platform to Adobe Experience Cloud will enable Adobe to offer an enhanced set of solutions to companies of all sizes.

Media and entertainment group Global has entered the ‘out of home’ (OOH) sector with the simultaneous purchase of Primesight and Outdoor Plus.
The deal sees GMT Communications Partners (Primesight) and Inflexion Private Equity (Outdoor Plus) exiting their respective investments in these companies.
Tthese acquisitions will be the foundation of a new division, Global Outdoor.
Primesight has an OOH advertising estate covering more than 35,000 sites nationwide, reaching over 95 per cent of the UK population. Primesight’s diverse portfolio incorporates large scale roadside billboards, display panels at cinemas and retail outlets and eleven of the UK’s airports including Gatwick.
Funds managed by CVC Capital Partners (CVC) are to make a majority interest investment in UnitedLex, the pioneer of enterprise legal services for the world’s leading corporations, law firms, and universities. The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The UnitedLex senior leadership team has fully reinvested in the transaction to further the company’s mission to lead the revolution of the practice of law and legal services delivery and to drive innovation in the legal marketplace.
The investment represents one of the largest transactions to date with any legal services provider. It comes on the heels of UnitedLex
Noerr has advised the investment companies Aleph Capital Partners and Crestview Partners on a planned EUR260 million investment in the DARAG Group.
The financing for the transactions, which is subject to the usual closing conditions including the required regulatory approval, is being carried out via a fund controlled by the investors.
DARAG specialises in the acquisition of inactive insurance portfolios from insurers and reinsurers and has completed 23 transactions worth over EUR740 million in 15 countries since 2009.

Rothschild Merchant Banking, the investment arm of Rothschild & Co, is pleased to announce that it has completed the final closing of Five Arrows Capital Partners (FACP), its first corporate private equity vehicle in the United States.

Development Partners International (DPI), a leading Pan-African private equity firm has made an investment through African Development Partners II (ADP II), in Moroccan irrigation systems and solutions business, Compagnie Marocaine de Goutte à goutte et de Pompage (CMGP).
Under the agreement, ADP II has acquired a majority stake in CMGP from existing shareholders, the original founding family, the Moamah family, and Amethis Maghreb Fund I, for a total amount of approximately USD100 million. This will be the largest private equity transaction announced in Morocco in 2018.
