European governments are involved in almost half of all venture capital investments for entrepreneurs, according to new research from emlyon business school. The researchers, Yan Alperovych and Anita Quas, Professors in Finance at emlyon business school, and their colleague from Ghent University, wanted to gain a panoramic view of the European venture capital market and determine the influence that governments had on investments.   Using four separate investment databases, the researchers reviewed 55,000 individual venture capital investments, spanning across 25 separate European countries between the years 1997-2015. Private equity firm HIG Capital’s (HIG) portfolio company Groupe Ecore (Ecore) has successfully completed a high-yield bond placement. The Group issued EUR255 million in senior secured floating rate notes, with Barclays acting as sole bookrunner. Established in 1993, Ecore is a leading player in the French metal recycling market. It employs over 1,400 people and recycles and sell 3.7 million tons of materials each year, including more than 3.0 million tons of ferrous metals. Ecore manages all stages of the recycling chain, from waste collection to processing, transport, and sale of recycled products. In 2017, Ecore generated revenue of EUR1.3
AfricInvest, a pan-African mid-cap-focused private equity firm, has held the final close of its North African Fund, Maghreb Private Equity IV (MPEF IV).   The African Development Bank joined the third and final investment round, committing EUR20 million to the fund and taking the fund’s total capital commitments to EUR194 million, in line with the fund’s target size.   MPEF IV is a 10-year fund managed by AfricInvest. It will invest in small and medium enterprises in North Africa (including Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia), looking to take substantial minority stakes. Versa Capital Management has completed the sale of Bell and Howell to Boston-based WestView Capital Partners (WestView).   Founded in 1907 and based in Durham, NC, Bell and Howell is a provider of technology-enabled solutions focused on enhancing communications and e-commerce experiences.   Versa, along with co-investor Access Value Investors, acquired Bell and Howell in 2011, and this sale is the culmination of the successful repositioning and realisation of the investment which included two previous division divestitures in 2017 (BCC Software and Fluence Automation).   Versa worked closely with Bell and Howell’s management to lead a significant and value-creating transformation

Hitachi Capital’s elite cycling squad, Team Hitachi400, has presented The Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital charity with a cheque for GBP33,000 following a gruelling four-day cycle from the UK to France. After vigorous training in the months before the 14-man team were waved off by staff from Hitachi Capital’s offices in Staines-Upon-Thames on Thursday 20 September. The investment round included participation from prominent buy side firms, industry executives and leading venture capital funds.
