As mainstream banks continue to face growing pressure from the alternative finance industry, a new study by Amicus Finance, a provider of short term lending solutions, has revealed the key factors driving small businesses towards alternative lenders.
According to the report, nearly half (45 per cent) of small business owners believe that alternative lenders offer more flexibility than banks, while 37 per cent said they have a greater ability to lend. A quarter (25 per cent) of small firms believe that alternative lenders outscore banks on customer service, specialist sector knowledge (24 per cent) and speed (22 per cent).

Big data analytics solutions provider Flytxt has closed a USD11 million (EUR10 million) funding round to finance its next phase of growth. The investment was led by Sunrise Capital GmbH and Big Data Investments with participation from Flytxt's existing investors.
Launched in 2008, Flytxt has previously received funding from a group of angels and family offices in Germany and The Netherlands. Growing Underground, London’s first subterranean farm, will start trading for the first time in mid-July.
Last year the farm successfully completed a crowd funding round that was oversubscribed.
The farm, in old World War II tunnels beneath the Northern Line at Clapham, is the brainchild of West Country entrepreneurs Richard Ballard and Steven Dring, in partnership with Michel Roux Jr, the Michelin-starred chef. Garageio is to be one of the initial investments of Amazon’s Alexa Fund, which has been established to provide developers, manufacturers, and start-ups of all sizes who are passionate about creating new experiences designed around the human voice.
Garageio was founded in 2012 by Zak Dziczkowski and Dave Reif to bring a home-automation upgrade to existing garage doors. Garageio allows a customer to quickly find out if their garage door is open or if the alarm is set using a simple voice command. Users can then close their garage door from anywhere in their house.
