GEMCORP, a new financial firm focused on investments in emerging markets, is now open for business. Frette, the international luxury linen and home furnishings business, has appointed Hervé Martin as chief executive with immediate effect. Domestic regulations in Europe are inhibiting the cross-border benefits of the European Commission’s Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD), according to analysis by law firm CMS. CMS has released a passporting guide to help Alternative Investment Fund Managers (AIFMs) navigate the new legislation and understand the complexities of cross-border fund management under AIFMD, other European directives and domestic regulations.   AIFMD, which came into force on 22 July 2014, promotes passporting rights as a key benefit for hedge, private equity, real estate and other alternative investment fund managers. Glennmont Partners, an investment manager dedicated to clean energy in Europe, has commenced operation of the 38MW Sleaford straw-fired renewable energy plant. The plant was built by a consortium of Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S and Burmeister and Wain Energy A/S.    Glennmont purchased 100 per cent of the equity in the project in December 2011, and financed the construction through a debt package provided by NIBC Bank NV, RBS, Siemens Bank GmbH and Unicredit Bank AG.    Sleaford will generate enough electricity to power 65,000 homes as well as providing free heat to local sports clubs and community

One in five (21 per cent) small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) cite cash flow as a major challenge to growth, according to a new study by venture capital investor Albion Ventures. Mid-market advisory firm Clearwater International completed 13 deals in two months over the summer, worth a combined value of GBP410m.
