A more expansive Significant Investor visa programme would help innovative Australian businesses benefit from venture capital funding to fuel future economic growth.
That’s according to a submission recently lodged by the Australian Private Equity & Venture Capital Association Limited (AVCAL).

Women’s health diagnostic company Concepta has completed a GBP2.3m round of equity financing managed by Diagnostic Capital.
The company was founded off the back of the technology and expertise of former senior Unipath scientists, who were responsible for creating leading brands of digital fertility tests, pregnancy tests and other women’s health diagnostics in the market today, including the Clearblue pregnancy tests.
Concepta will now develop and market a novel diagnostic device for the simple and accurate testing of fertility, pregnancy and early stage healthy pregnancy monitoring.

Mobeus Investments has partially realised its investment in VSI Limited by selling one of the firm’s two operating businesses, MachineWorks Software, to Westec Holding Company.
The value of the deal has not been disclosed.
Mobeus backed the management buyout of VSI back in 2006.
Based in Sheffield, MachineWorks is a developer of simulation and verification toolkit technology used in computer-aided manufacturing. The firm’s software products simulates machining and helps manufacturers to avoid expensive production mistakes which could cause expensive raw materials to be scrapped or production runs to be disrupted.

Pilson, Mejia and Imhoff previously ran the secondary advisory business at Atlantic-Pacific Capital, where they advised a wide range of clients on secondary market transactions.

Alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group has appointed Jeffrey C Holland as managing director and head of the private client group.
Holland comes to this newly-created position from Cole Real Estate Investments, where he was president and chief operating officer, overseeing the private capital and real estate groups.
Holland joined the firm on 17 March and is based in New York.
Holland will oversee the group responsible for the development of Carlyle's relationships with individual investors and intermediaries serving these investors. The group led by Holland will focus on arrangements with bank feeder funds and other financial advisors
More than 200 jobs have been saved after Enact, the GBP7.5m SME fund launched by private equity house Endless, agreed to buy 35 West Cornwall Pasty Company outlets and stores, together with the brand.
The deal follows the appointment of administrators over the company.
The investment in West Cornwall Pasty Company is the first completed by Enact and comes just three months after the fund’s launch. Enact has been supported in the transaction by Sankaty Advisors.

Benefit Street Partners and its affiliates have held the final closing of Providence Debt Fund III and its parallel funds, a middle market direct lending fund.
The fund had demand surpassing its USD1.75bn hard cap.
The fund was substantially oversubscribed and exceeded its target of USD1.0bn.
BSP began raising the fund in the first half of 2013. BSP previously raised Fund II in 2010, which also focused on middle market private debt and direct lending, and Fund I in 2008.

International aircraft leasing group Avolon’s committed fleet has reached 202 aircraft serving 47 customers globally, according to the firm’s trading update for Q1 2014.
Avolon’s committed fleet increased by 20 aircraft in Q1 2014 valued at USD1.3bn at base value, and the company has continued strong momentum during the quarter in placement of forward order book.
Avolon has sold 12 aircraft in the past 12 months, and 21 aircraft cumulatively in the past 24 months.
Meanwhile the firm has expanded its customer base to 47 airlines.

Sub-investment grade corporate credit specialist Alcentra, part of BNY Mellon, has invested in Menix Groupe, the holding company for healthcare firms Serf, Dedienne Santé and Global D and a manufacturer of orthopaedic and dental implants in France.
The funding takes the form of a unitranche investment provided by funds managed by Alcentra and will support the buyout by funds advised by LBO Partners in association with Turenne Investissement and Keensight Capital.
The unitranche investment will provide capital for the growth strategy of Menix.
