Cloud gaming company Playcast Media Systems has raised USD10 million in Series B financing from MK Capital, a Chicago/Los Angeles-based venture fund specialising in digital media, and JVP, a leading Israeli venture capital firm focused on media, technology and content. Existing shareholders Xenia Venture Capital and C.Mer Industries also participated in the round. Independence Equity Management has launched Independence Equity I LP, a venture capital fund that will invest in early-stage companies commercialising technologies that improve resource utilisation.   Today’s announcement follows the first close of capital for the new fund, which will begin making investments this year.  A second close is tentatively scheduled for April 30, 2011. The fund’s principals define resource utilisation as the use or consumption of resources such as raw materials and labor. The objective is to identify innovations in business processes and technologies that reduce raw material consumption, improve yield/performance, increase labor efficiency or enable point-of-use production. The total value of european private equity deals in 2010 totalled EUR71.5bn, and increase of 143 per cent on 2009, according to Candover’s latest Private Equity Barometer. In the final quarter of 2010 there were 230 private equity-backed deals recorded with a value of EUR22bn, slightly down on the 235 recorded in the same quarter of 2009, but up 50% from EUR10.3bn in value terms. The total number of buyouts increased for the third consecutive quarter, with Q4’s 101 deals making it the best performing quarter in 18 months in volume terms, and up 31% on the 77 buyouts recorded
Amgen is to acquire BioVex Inc a portfolio company of Forbion Capital Partners. Biovex Group is a privately held biotechnology company that has two biologics in clinical development, including Biovex’s lead product candidate, OncoVEXGM-CSF, a first in class oncolytic vaccine that may prove to be a paradigm-shifting approach to treating melanoma and other solid tumors, as well as a vaccine for genital herpes. The transaction has been approved by the boards of directors of each company. In 2010, some 2,799 venture deals raised USD26.2 billion, a 6% increase in deals and an 11% increase in capital invested over 2009, when 2,636 deals raised USD23.6 billion, according to Dow Jones VentureSource. And the growth in venture capital investment was driven by capital commitments outside of the Information Technology (IT) and Healthcare industries, which are traditionally venture capitalists’ comfort zones. German venture capital funds have generated comparable or better returns than their US counterparts, as new data presented by three of Germany’s largest venture capital firms Earlybird, Target Partners and Wellington Partners shows.
