Private equity firm HIG Capital has opened an office in Rio de Janeiro and appointed Fernando Marques Oliveira as a Managing Director to lead its Brazil and Latin America team.
Prior to joining HIG, Marques Oliveira was Managing Director and head of the Latin America team at General Atlantic (GA), where he was involved in a number of transactions including Qualicorp and Peixe Urbano. Before GA, Oliveira spent many years at Grupo Icatu, where he led a number of successful investments, including Mabel, Aracruz and Grupo ABC.

Commercial law firm EMW has appointed Jodi Tierney (pictured) as its new Head of Asset Based Lending (ABL), as part of substantial plans to expand its London office.
Tierney joins from Francis Wilks & Jones LLP where she was Partner, having previously been a Senior Associate at Hammonds. She will head up a fast-growing 10-strong Asset Based Lending practice which was recently appointed to the asset finance panel of Santander in 2010.

General Atlantic LLC (GA) has appointed David Topper, a former Vice Chairman of JP Morgan and leader in its capital markets group, as a Special Advisor to the firm.
Topper has nearly 30 years of capital markets and investment banking experience. He will be working closely with GA’s portfolio group as well as GA’s portfolio company management teams on specific projects.

International law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is to add two partners to its London funds practice. Tim Pearce and Ian Meade will join the firm from Simmons & Simmons.
Their arrival at Akin Gump will significantly expand the firm’s London practice which advises leading funds and fund managers on a broad range of issues, investment products and asset classes, including fund formation and financial services regulation and compliance, as well as their business activities more generally.

The middle-market, private equity buyout fund, GenNx360 Capital Partners, has added Jerod A Pierce to its Management Company’s operating team.
Pierce will focus on operational value creation, operational due diligence and will work hand-in-hand with portfolio management to both identify operational value creation opportunities and to implement them. He will report to Chuck Castine, Senior Partner, and will be based in the firm’s Seattle office.
For the past five years, Pierce has held a number of positions in the financial services industry, most recently at the investment banking firm of DA Davidson & Co which has given him hands-on experience

The European Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (EVCA) has appointed Emma Thorpe as Head of Communications. Thorpe is responsible for the EVCA’s public relations and membership communications and will be based in Brussels and London.
During 2011, Thrope advised the EVCA on strategic communications and issues management. Additional clients in the financial industry included consultancies Patomak Partners and AT Kearney, and private equity house, Texas Pacific Group. For four years to 2011, Thorpe was Director of European Communications for private equity firm, The Carlyle Group, where she was responsible for European government affairs and public relations.
