South African rugby officials have explained the decision to postpone a special general meeting (SGM) in Cape Town, initially scheduled for Thursday, to discuss private equity investment in the sport’s commercial rights.
The delay follows a request from Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture.
In a statement, SA Rugby confirmed the postponement: “The planned SGM to consider a private equity investment in the sport’s commercial rights has been postponed at the request of Minister McKenzie. The meeting was due to take place in Cape Town but will be rescheduled to allow for a more thorough briefing of the government on the proposal. A new date will be confirmed following further engagement with the minister before the end of the year.”
Mark Alexander, President of the South African Rugby Union (SARU), expressed the union’s willingness to comply with the minister’s request. “We received the minister’s request this morning and shared it with our member union presidents. While we had previously briefed him on the matter, we respect his need for additional assurance given the significance of this proposal.”
Alexander emphasised that the potential private equity partnership was designed to foster sustainable growth, rather than being just a financial boost, and assured that SA Rugby would maintain control over the Springboks. “The proposed partnership presents an opportunity for organic growth and ensures that the Springboks remain under SA Rugby’s direction, protecting the future of our organisation,” he stated.
In his letter to SARU, Minister McKenzie highlighted the importance of proper consultation and transparency in such matters, particularly given the public interest surrounding the proposal. “I humbly request that Thursday’s meeting be postponed so that I can be fully informed about the details of the proposed deal, or any agreement that may be made through your structures,” the minister wrote.
The meeting will be rescheduled after the minister is briefed, with a new date to be confirmed before the end of the year.
