Albion Ventures agrees Opta sale to Perform Group

Venture capital investor Albion Ventures is in the process of disposing its investment in Opta following the conditional sale of the company to Perform Group for GBP40m.

Opta is a provider of sports data and analysis. Formed in 1996, the company uses proprietary technology to collect and analyse statistical data for a range of sports. Its technology has become a staple for a variety of media and professional organisations allowing for more innovative broadcast coverage and more intelligent professional analysis. Opta services over 300 customers in 40 countries globally.
Perform Group is a digital sports media group. It has 22 offices globally and employs more than 900 staff.
Albion has backed Opta since February 2008. In total the funds had invested approximately GBP2.1m over three rounds of funding. As a result of the sale, funds managed by Albion will have generated a return of over three times their investment.
Patrick Reeve, managing partner at Albion Ventures, says: “We are delighted with the success of Opta.  We have enjoyed partnering the company’s highly impressive management team through a period of rapid growth during which they have created a leading brand with the dominant position in their global market. This investment has generated an excellent return for our funds and underlines our strategy of backing strong management teams in high growth sectors. We wish the company well as it embarks on its next stage of its development.”
