BioMedPartners, a European healthcare venture capital firm, has strengthened its management team with the addition of Dr Andreas J. Schulze and the promotion of Patrick Burgermeister.

Dr Schulze (pictured) joined the BioMedPartners team in Basel, Switzerland as a new partner on 1 March 2009. He is a biochemist and industrial engineer and brings significant expertise in the fields of bioscience, pharmaceutical R&D, medtech and financials.

Before joining the pharmaceutical industry Dr Schulze served as researcher at Marion-Merrell-Dow (now Sanofi Aventis) in Strasbourg as well as vice president research and development at Pentapharm (now DSM Nutritional Products) in Basel.

Between 2000 and 2005, Dr Schulze headed the biotech team at the German venture capital firm DEWB = in Jena. As of 2006, Dr Schulze was chief executive of Neurotune, a biotech company in Schlieren.

Burgermeister, who has been promoted to principal, joined the team in 2006 coming from Novartis where he was senior portfolio manager responsible for the evaluation and prioritisation of development projects.

Prior to joining Novartis, he was a financial analyst at Zürcher Kantonalbank where he was responsible for covering pharma and biotech shares and a consultant to the PharmaVision healthcare fund.

Thomas Möller, general partner at BioMedPartners, says: ‘We are very pleased to welcome Dr Andreas J. Schulze as new member of our team. His strong scientific and industry background as well as his experience in the venture capital sector are highly beneficial assets that will not only further support our portfolio companies but also strengthen BioMedPartner’s role as an active lead investor in the Alpine Rim region.’
