Private equity firm The Gores Group has completed the acquisition of The Hay Group, one of the leading European manufacturers of high precision forged and machined components for engines, gearboxes and axles for the automotive, commercial vehicle and bearing industries. Terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
Founded in 1925, The Hay Group has nearly 1,600 employees between its three German manufacturing operations sites. Part of the strategy under the new ownership will be to expand The Hay Group’s operations into Asia to meet the demands and requirements of its customers.

The majority of investors in hedge funds, commodity trading advisors and private equity funds expect to increase their allocations to those private investments in 2012, according to a survey by AlphaMetrix.
A total of 65 per cent of investment managers and investors surveyed said they intend to increase their allocations to private investments by some degree this year, with 25 per cent of participants planning to raise their allocations significantly. Further, 35 per cent intend to leave their existing allocations unchanged.

EFAMA has commented on the the US Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service’s long-awaited proposed regulations under the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), which were released on 8 February, 2012
FATCA is a sweeping law that requires non-US financial institutions, including funds, to determine which of their accounts and investors are US persons, and to report such US persons to the IRS. The consequence of non-compliance is a 30 per cent withholding tax on payments of certain US source income.

EWR Neue Energien GmbH (EWR), a subsidiary of Rhenish Hessian energy supply company EWR Aktiengesellschaft, has acquired a wind farm in Dorn-Dürkheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, from ABO Wind AG. In a joint venture with juwi Holding AG, the company will also construct and operate a wind farm in Worms.

Nick Kershaw, who previously held both the Group Chief Executive and the Legal Chief Executive roles, has handed over the Legal Chief Executive role to Bergstrom, but continues as the Group Chief Executive, having been elected for a second three year term. Kershaw will also be returning part time to a client facing role.

Global alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group has received a binding irrevocable offer from Glory Ltd to purchase Talaris for an enterprise value of GBP650m.
Talaris is a global provider of cash handling equipment, servicing and software solutions and Glory is a manufacturer of money handling systems. Following consultation with the French works council, if the offer is accepted, the contemplated transaction will be subject to regulatory approvals.

Conference and training venue provider etc.venues, backed by Dunedin, is planning to open a 20,000 square foot conference and meeting venue in St Paul’s, London.
The new venue in a landmark City building at 200 Aldersgate will include the largest conference suite in the etc.venues portfolio, which will hold 400 delegates theatre style, or 250 in cabaret set-up.
Since Dunedin backed the buyout of etc.venues in 2006, sales have grown by 94 per cent and the number of venues has increased from six to eleven.

The Australian Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (AVCAL) has appointed David Brown as the new Chair of the governing Council.
Brown, who has been a Member of the Council for the past three and a half years, formally takes over the role at the next Council meeting on 16 February.

Edinburgh Research and Innovation (ERI), the University of Edinburgh’s technology transfer office, has announced a strategic alliance with MTI, the London-based venture capital fund manager which secures a GBP150 million injection to university spin out activity.
Companies working through ERI, or the technology transfer offices at the University of Manchester and University College London, can access the Orion Fund, a significant venture capital fund, raised and managed by MTI.
The Orion Fund will invest primarily into companies and commercialisation projects emerging from the three universities.
