EDG Partners, a private equity firm focused exclusively on the healthcare industry, has closed its second fund, EDG Partners Fund II, LP. The fund closed above target at USD177.75 million. Framas develops and manufactures high-tech soles and plastic components primarily for the sport shoe market. Main customers include Adidas and Nike as well as further leading global shoe manufacturers. With its 3,300 employees, the group generates revenues of over USD150 million. Returns on investments in US private equity and venture capital funds were negative for the three-month period ending 30 September, 2011, marking the end of a series of nine consecutive quarters of positive performance for both alternative asset classes. The downward turn was due in part to the escalating debt crisis in Europe, which helped cause an even sharper drop in the public markets during the period, according to Cambridge Associates LLC. International legal practice Norton Rose LLP has advised its client Duet Private Equity on the acquisition of a controlling interest in Dashen Brewery, Ethiopia’s largest independent brewer. The value of the acquisition is USD90 million, making it the largest private equity investment in to Ethiopia to date. The investment will be used to increase the capacity at Dashen’s existing site in Gondar, Ethiopia and develop new production facilities in Addis Ababa. Tough market conditions are driving chairmen and non-executive directors across the private equity space to rethink remuneration structures according to the initial findings of a survey from specialist leadership consultancy Tyler Mangan and corporate finance advisory firm Clearwater Corporate Finance.   The preliminary responses suggest that changes in expectations, lengthening exit timescales and lower valuations are creating challenges for chairmen and forcing them to adjust compensation models.
