Retiring California utility chief John Bryson joins KKR

Kohlberg Kravis Roberts has appointed John E.

Kohlberg Kravis Roberts has appointed John E. Bryson, the just-retired chairman and chief executive officer of Edison International, as a senior advisor, bringing more than 30 years of experience as an industry leader and regulator to KKR’s global infrastructure investment business.

‘We are delighted to welcome John as a senior advisor to KKR’s infrastructure team,’ say the firm’s founders Henry R. Kravis and George R. Roberts. ‘His many years of experience building on and improving the assets and services of a large, complex and regulated business like Edison complements our group’s objective to further enhance the value of global infrastructure through private investment. John will add enormous value to the infrastructure assets we invest in around the world.’

Bryson retired on July 31 as chairman and chief executive of Edison International, the parent company of Southern California Edison, a regulated electric utility, and Edison Mission Group, a competitive power generation business and parent company to Edison Mission Energy and Edison Capital. He joined Southern California Edison in 1984, becoming chairman and chief executive of Edison International six years later.

He was previously a partner at the law firm of Morrison & Foerster, and from 1979 to 1982 he was president of the California Public Utilities Commission, having been chairman of the California State Water Resources Control Board. Earlier he practiced law and was a co-founder and attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Established in 1976, KKR is a sponsor and manager funds that make private equity investments in North America, Europe and Asia from offices in New York, Menlo Park, San Francisco, London, Paris, Hong Kong, Beijing, Tokyo and Sydney. Last month KKR announced it would go public through the acquisition of KKR Private Equity Investors, a permanent capital fund listed on Euronext Amsterdam that invests in KKR-identified investments. It also sponsors KKR Financial and the KKR Strategic Capital Funds, which invests in debt transactions.
