Shakepay, a Canadian bitcoin technology company enabling customers to easily buy and earn bitcoin through financial applications, has raised CAD44 million in a Series A investment, at a CAD313m valuation. The round was led by QED Investors, a US-based venture capital firm that invests in businesses that disrupt and empower the financial technology industry, funding over 150 successful fintech companies. Existing investors Boost VC and BoxOne Ventures also participated along with Golden Ventures, Broadhaven, Henri Machalani, Mike Murchison, Jevon MacDonald, Mark MacLeod, Dan Debow, Farhan Thawar, and several product leaders from Shopify. Maple Finance has acquired Avari, an undercollateralised lending protocol, which will allow Maple to launch on the Solana blockchain quickly, becoming the first corporate credit marketplace to do so. The acquihire of Avari and its team, will increase Maple’s total addressable market (TAM) and grow the potential total value locked (TVL) of the protocol, making Maple the largest undercollateralised lending product by TVL in decentralised finance (DeFi) and building the strongest engineering team on Solana.  Undercollateralized lending in crypto is still comparatively small, representing less than 1 per cent of the outstanding debt market. BlockFills, a digital asset trading and financial technology company, has closed a USD37 million Series A funding round led by institutional investors, including Susquehanna Private Equity Investments, CME Ventures, Simplex Ventures, C6E, Nexo Inc, and several other institutional investors and funds. This is the second multimillion-dollar funding round since the company’s founding in 2018. BlockFills has raised a total of USD44 million to date from institutional investors. Big Health, a digital therapeutics company dedicated to helping millions back to good mental health, has raised USD75 million in a Series C funding round, led by new investor SoftBank Vision Fund 2. ArrowMark Partners and existing investors Octopus Ventures, Gilde Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente Ventures (KPV), and Morningside Ventures, also participated.
Pixis (formerly known as Pyxis One), a provider of contextual codeless AI infrastructure for complete marketing optimisation, has secured US USD100 million in a Series C funding round led by SoftBank Vision 2. Pixis will leverage the fresh funds to help the company rapidly scale its AI platforms and plugins, as well as accelerate expansions across North America, Europe, and APAC.   The Series C round included participation from new investor General Atlantic, a global growth equity firm, plus existing investors Celesta Capital, Premji Invest, Chiratae Ventures, and Crimsonox Ventures. Vinter, Europe’s fastest-growing index provider specialised in crypto assets, has raised a further USD3.4m as it continues to expand its range of crypto asset indexes for ETP and ETF issuers. The round was led by Octopus Ventures, with participation from the Ricketts family office, D4 Ventures, Pfeffer Capital and notable angels including Gokul Rajaram, Marc Powers and David Chreng.
Global investment firm NPX Capital, through its private equity arm, NPX Private Equity, has invested USD43 million into digital content developer Copin Communications. Founded in 2017, Copin Communications is a digital content developer with specialties in character design, emoji, webtoon and animation productions.  In September 2021, NPX Capital made its first investment in Copin Communications worth USD13 million. Since then, NPX Capital has been closely cooperating with Copin Communications, which led to the additional investment, which will be used to strengthen and diversify digital content production capabilities as well as to support business expansion overseas, targeting promising global markets including
European private equity firm IK Partners, via the IK Small Cap III Fund, is to acquire FCG, from international private equity group Bridgepoint. The deal, which is subject to customary regulatory approvals, is expected to close in the second quarter of 2022. Financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.   FCG is a GRC services provider, offering advisory, outsourcing, GRC technology and fund administration services to the financial services industry.    Together with IK, FCG plans to continue its international growth strategy, further strengthen the service offering within key growth areas such as ESG. CBPE Capital (CBPE) has completed its investment in Direct Commercial Limited (DCL) and Carraig insurance Company Limited (Carraig) (together Direct Commercial Group, DCG) alongside Phil Cunningham (founder and CEO) and Management. DCL is a commercial motor insurance specialist. As a full-service MGA (Managing General Underwriter/Agent), DCL provides underwriting services, offers policy administration and in-house claims handling.   The group also includes Carraig, an insurance carrier based in Gibraltar, which provides insurance capacity to DCL alongside Munich Re Group. Amber Implants, a medical technology company developing next generation spinal implants for spinal injuries, has closed a USD10 million Series A Financing which was co-led by the firm’s founders and existing venture capital investors, with participation from angel investors and non-dilutive government funding. Proceeds from the financing will be used to advance the Company’s revolutionary vertebral body augmentation system, VCFix®, through all preclinical verification and validation tests, ISO 13485 certification, regulatory activities, and an early feasibility clinical study and a pilot and pivotal clinical trial.
