Alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group is to acquire the Red Oak power generation facility in Sayreville, New Jersey, and has separately closed on the purchase of five power plants in California.   The acquisitions, which were executed in conjunction with Carlyle’s power affiliate Cogentrix, bring the total enterprise value of power asset transactions since Carlyle funds acquired Cogentrix in late 2012 to more than USD1.2bn.   Robert Mancini, Carlyle managing director and chairman of the board of Cogentrix, says: “Since Carlyle funds acquired Cogentrix, our power team has committed approximately USD600m of equity capital. The Angel CoFund, a fund that invests in high-growth SMEs alongside UK angel groups, has realised its first investment through the sale of Nonlinear Dynamics, a Newcastle-based developer of software for analysing proteins, to Waters Inc. TyresOnTheDrive.com, the online mobile tyre-fitting service, has secured a further GBP1.5m investment, led by MMC Ventures and supported by EV Group, to support its nationwide expansion.    This latest round of funding brings the total investment, including funding from the founders, to over GBP2.6m.   Tyres on the Drive, which currently covers the North West and the West Midlands, is pushing ahead with plans to expand its operations into Yorkshire and across the South and London as quickly as possible.  As a result of its rapid growth, the investment will be used to double its current fleet of specially designed
Summit Partners is to sell Actix Ltd, an independent software provider in mobile optimisation, to Amdocs for approximately USD120m in cash, subject to customary closing conditions.   Bill McHale, chief executive of Actix, says: “Summit Partners’ expertise in the mobile telecommunications and software sectors enabled Actix to develop the ActixOne platform. The optimization space has been undergoing significant changes, and Summit helped the Actix management team become a significant vendor in this dynamic, growing market. Actis, the pan-emerging markets private equity firm, has acquired 60 per cent of Atlantic Energias Renovaveis, a Brazilian renewable energy company, for an initial commitment of USD169m through a primary transaction.    Actis will be joining existing shareholders Pattac (24 per cent) and Servinoga (16 per cent), the co-founders of Atlantic and experienced infrastructure investors.   Atlantic is a renewable energy platform that has 220 MW of projects with long-term PPAs and a proprietary land bank with 1.8 GW of wind potential. Wishabi has secured a USD15m series B financing round with Insight Venture Partners.   The new capital will be used to accelerate the development and deployment of new technology and for continued rapid growth in the US market.   Retailers today spend an estimated USD18bn to print and distribute advertising flyers, also known as circulars, through direct mail and in daily and weekly newspapers.   Using Wishabi’s digital circular platform, retailers now are delivering hyper-local, hyper-personal flyers to current and prospective customers. Boticca.com, a fashion accessories-only focused website, has closed a GBP2.5m series A financing from UK-based venture capital firm MMC Ventures and high net worth individuals in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.   The individual investors include Turkish entrepreneur Sina Afra, chief executive and chairman of Markafoni and former European director of M&A for eBay.   This marks Boticca’s second round of financing following a GBP1.5m seed round in June 2011 led by French Internet entrepreneurs’ fund ISAI, who also contributed to this round.   Launched in October 2010, Boticca.com enables customers to connect with, and purchase directly, from professional small
MidOcean Partners, a middle market private equity firm, is to sell Bushnell Group to ATK.   Bushnell specialises in branded sports optics, outdoor accessories and performance eyewear.   MidOcean acquired Bushnell in August 2007 and has helped to transform the business as it completed nine add-on acquisitions into complementary product lines.   Bushnell offers a broad portfolio of high-quality, affordable products such as laser rangefinders, trail cameras, riflescopes, binoculars, hunting and shooting sports accessories, and sun, winter and safety eyewear.   “Bushnell is a leading provider of outdoor consumer-branded products,” says Blake Lipham, Bushnell Outdoor Products’ president and chief executive.
Wind farm
Fortum and Metsähallitus are to sell the Kuolavaara-Keulakkopää and Joukhaisselkä pre-construction stage wind power projects in Lapland to Impax New Energy Investors II.     Fortum’s share of the projects is 51 per cent and Metsähallitus’s 49 per cent.    The Kuolavaara-Keulakkopää project is located in the Kittilä and Sodankylä municipalities.  A wind park consisting of a total of 17 wind power plants with an output of approximately 50 megawatts (MW) is planned for the area.  The Joukhaisselkä’s wind power park of eight to 10 turbines, with a planned output of about 25 MW, is located in the Sodankylä municipality.
Newcastle Investment Corp has acquired Dow Jones Local Media Group from News Corp for USD87m.   The company made a total equity investment of USD54m, including transaction expenses, and financed the remainder of the purchase price with USD33m of debt.   Local Media Group operates 33 local publications, including eight daily and 15 weekly newspapers, in seven states.
