Investment bank Piper Jaffray Companies has sold Advisory Research through two separate transactions which will result in the firm exiting its traditional asset management business.  The midstream energy business of Advisory Research, is being sold to Tortoise Capital Advisors, while the remaining Advisory Research business is being acquired by a partner group led by Matthew Swaim, managing director and executive committee chairman at Advisory Research.  Piper Jaffray expects to generate net cash proceeds from these two transactions of approximately USD60-70 million, exclusive of potential earn-out proceeds. “Tortoise has built an excellent investment management platform focused on essential assets,” says Deb

An affiliate of Versa Capital Management (Versa) has acquired Alex Apparel Group (Alex Apparel), a designer and wholesaler of social dresses and separates under the Alex Evenings, SL Fashions and Ignite Evenings brands, from Atlantic Street Capital. Israeli startup TriEye, whose innovative Short-Wave-Infra-Red (SWIR) sensing technology is able to see in adverse weather and night-time conditions, has closed a USD17 million Series A funding round, led by Intel Capital.  Other investors include Marius Nacht, co-founder of Check Point Software Technologies, and TriEye’s existing investor Grove Ventures, headed by TriEye chairman Dov Moran, the inventor of the USB flash drive and co-founder of M-Systems.
