The Carlyle Group has bolstered its healthcare investment capabilities with the acquisition of life sciences investment manager Abingworth, according to a report by AlternativesWatch. Financial details of the transaction, which is expected to close later this year, have not been disclosed. The report quotes “officials at the $301 billion Carlyle” as saying that the acquisition now allows Carlyle to operate across the life sciences and healthcare investment spectrum from venture capital to through to buyouts.

Omega Systems, a portfolio company of Pfingsten Partners and managed service provider to highly regulated and security-conscious businesses, has merged with ACE IT Solutions, a New Jersey-based technology solutions provider. Global investment firm KKR is to purchase Barracuda Networks Inc, a provider of cloud-first security solutions, from Thoma Bravo, a software investment firm. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Founded in 2003, Barracuda offers a broad suite of cybersecurity solutions across email protection, application security, network security and data protection that can be deployed and managed in both cloud and hybrid environments. The Company focuses on serving small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and has more than 200,000 customers worldwide across a variety of industries, including education, government, financial services, health care, retail, consumer goods and manufacturing.
Muddy Waters Capital (Muddy Waters), an activist investment firm, has appointed Marta Obando as head of investor relations and marketing.

Global water technology company, Xylem (NYSE:XYL), has announced Limited Partner (LP) investments in venture capital funds Burnt Island Ventures and The Westly Group’s Funds III and IV, supporting the development of innovative water and industrial technologies. The combined $20 million investment across both funds forms a key part of Xylem’s external innovation programme, Xylem Innovation Labs. These investments bolster Xylem Innovation Labs’ open innovation network and its commitment to bringing the most important water technology innovations to market at speed and scale.
Turnspire Capital Partners (Turnspire) has added Luther Gatewood to its investment team as a Principal. Gatewood joins Turnspire from Athyrium Capital Partners where he was a Principal and played a leadership role in all aspects of the investment process, including origination, due diligence and structuring, in addition to driving portfolio company value enhancement. Prior to Athyrium, he was an investment analyst at Q Investments and at Elliott Management. Earlier in his career, Luther was an associate at Apax Partners and an analyst at Morgan Stanley.
