The number and value of acquisitions made by private equity-backed businesses across the UK in 2021 significantly exceeded levels seen in 2019 and 2020, according to Rickitt Mitchell’s Buy and Build Barometer. The latest analysis from the corporate finance firm, conducted in partnership with Experian Market iQ, reveals 578 deals were completed across the UK in 2021, up more than 56 per cent on 2020 (370) and more than double that of 2019 (276).   The South East (58) saw the highest number of acquisitions out of any region, followed jointly by East of England and London (47). Glennmont Partners from Nuveen (Glennmont), one of the world’s largest fund managers investing in clean energy, has completed the purchase of a 50 per cent stake in the 900MW German offshore wind farm Borkum Riffgrund 3 from Ørsted for a transaction value of cEUR1.2 billion.

An affiliate of New York-based hedge fund Standard General and  private equity firm Apollo Global Management are to acquire US broadcast and digital media company TEGNA for USD5.4 billion.

M&A

Last year’s record volume of technology M&A activity has been fuelled by a tidal wave of private equity (PE) money. Given the large amount of global PE investment capital waiting to be deployed, tech-focused investment bank ICON Corporate Finance predicts this trend will continue and says that it is an opportune time to consider a PE deal.

RESEARCH

China continues to be the most favoured destination for venture capital (VC) investors across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, with China startups raising USD6.5 billion in VC funding during January 2022, the highest across the region during the month, according to GlobalData.

FUNDRAISING

Alternative credit investment firm Crescent Capital Group has held the final close of its third direct lending fund, Crescent Direct Lending Fund III (CDL Fund III), raising USD6 billion in investable capital including targeted leverage and separately managed accounts investing alongside the fund.

SURVEY

Competition for private equity and venture capital funds has increased in recent months, but fundraising conditions should improve in 2022, according to Acuity Knowledge Partners’ (Acuity) global Private Equity (PE) and Venture Capital (VC) survey.

FUNDRAISING

Private markets firm Partners Group has secured total client commitments of USD8.5 billion for its third direct infrastructure programme.
