SYZ Asset Management, the institutional asset management arm of the Swiss banking Group SYZ & Co, has appointed Ian Penrose as distribution director for the UK.
Penrose, who will be responsible for promoting SYZ Asset Management’s (SYZ AM) capabilities, including the SYZ AM and Oyster funds, joins from Barclays Capital Funds & Advisory, where he was responsible for leading fund distribution to UK professional clients.
Penrose will be in charge of promoting the full range of SYZ Asset Management’s capabilities to the UK domestic market, including segregated mandates as well as the SYZ AM and OYSTER funds. With
Mercia Fund Management (MFM) has appointed Mike Hayes to spearhead the venture capital fund’s new digital and e-commerce division.
The new division will provide investment opportunities for high-growth potential businesses in the e-commerce, digital media and gaming sectors.
Hayes brings over 23 years’ experience in interactive businesses. He was CEO of gaming giants, SEGA Europe and SEGA of America, and was instrumental in setting up and coordinating a successful digital division within the company. Platte River Equity has appointed Kristian Whalen as managing director.
Whalen comes to Platte River following the raising of its USD405m third fund, which closed in late 2012.
Whalen brings 15 years of experience as a private equity investor in numerous industrial and service-based operating companies. He will focus on investments in Platte River’s target industrial sectors, which are complementary to Whalen’s prior experience.

Cushman & Wakefield has appointed Oriol Barrachina, partner and current director of Cushman & Wakefield in Barcelona, as the new managing partner for Spain with effect from 1 January 2014.
Barrachina (pictured) will take over from Roger Cooke, who has led the Spanish business since 1995. Cooke will remain at the firm through the transition period.

Alternative investments provider Altegris has made a number of additions to its sales and legal teams to support its expansion.
Since Altegris launched one of the first actively managed, managed futures mutual funds in 2010, the firm has experienced significant growth both in assets and in adoption by financial intermediaries.
Natalie Maniaci has joined Altegris as the firm’s senior counsel and advisory chief compliance officer. Les Carrington comes to Altegris as the new internal sales desk manager after holding that same position for the last five of her 13 years with LPL.

Ryan Moss has joined Perella Weinberg Partners as a partner in its advisory business.
Moss will focus on providing strategic and financial advice to clients in the natural resources sector.
Moss joins a growing team of advisory professionals covering the sector globally, including partners Michael Dickman in New York and Bob Maguire in London.
Moss has approximately 12 years of investment banking experience. He was most recently a managing director in Morgan Stanley’s investment banking division in Houston, where he covered midstream and upstream companies, including US super-majors, large cap independents and mid cap independents. While at
Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking has added director Dave Furlong and associate director Kate Grimoldby to its North of England acquisition finance team.
The appointments will support the origination and execution of mid-market leveraged financings, including buyouts, bolt-on acquisitions and re-financings, with private equity firms and companies across the North West, Yorkshire and the North East.
Furlong, who has 10 years’ industry experience, joins from HSBC where he was deputy head of leveraged finance for the North of England, arranging facilities to support sponsor-led deals across the three regions. Prior to this he held director and associate director roles
Nova Capital Management has appointed Richard Lobo as an investment partner in the firm’s North American team.
Nova opened its North American headquarters in Chicago in January this year. This appointment follows Nova’s recent announcement of its acquisition of five home improvement and hardware brands from Newell Rubbermaid in the US.

Summit Partners, a growth equity investor, has appointed two senior healthcare investment professionals: Darren Black, managing director in Summit’s Boston office, and Thomas Tarnowski, principal in Summit’s London office.

LBO France has appointed Etienne Colas as managing director within the operating team.
The operating team was put in place by LBO France to help support its underlying portfolio companies and to generate value creation. The team’s mission is to structure the value creation process by working with the portfolio company’s management.
Composed of three members, the operating team reports directly to LBO France’s executive board. Colas joins Guy Latourrette, former chief executive of La Redoute and Devanlay-Lacoste, and Gilles Taldu, partner and member of LBO France’s executive board and former manager of Thomson and Capgemini.
