Frances Woo, Appleby
Appleby has made a number of changes to its leadership team, including the appointment of Frances Woo as group chairman. Woo (pictured) will succeed Peter Bubenzer who will be retiring from the Appleby Group on 31 March 2013, following a career at Appleby that spans over 32 years. Appleby has also appointed a new global head of its corporate and commercial practice. Effective early in the New Year, Cameron Adderley will lead the corporate group, which is one of the largest in the offshore world. Thomas Mirow is to join RiverRock European Capital Partners’ senior advisory board, effective 7 January. From 2008 to 2012, Mirow (pictured) was the fifth president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in London. Previously he was a State Minister in Hamburg (1991 to 2001) and worked in the private sector before being appointed by Chancellor Schröder as Director of the Economics Department at the Chancellery (2005). After the election of Chancellor Merkel in late 2005 and up to 2008, he served as Germany’s Deputy Finance Minister (Staatssekretär) in charge of international affairs and financial markets. Berkshire Partners, the Boston-based investment firm, has appointed Kenneth S Bring, Matthew A Janchar and Greg J Pappas as managing directors effective 1 January. They join the 14 current managing directors of Berkshire in managing the firm and its affiliated investment funds. These individuals will continue to focus their efforts on finance, capital markets and portfolio support, respectively. Bring (pictured), who is the firm’s chief financial officer, joined Berkshire in 2002. Prior to Berkshire, Bring was a CPA at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he managed financial audits for investment management and private equity companies. ClearMomentum, a provider of private equity portfolio management software, has appointed Dan Dykens as the company’s new president and chief executive. With nearly two decades of experience in the financial technology and hedge fund industries, Dykens (pictured) replaces ClearMomentum founder and CEO John Grabski, who will continue to serve as the company’s chairman of the board. Venture capital firm General Catalyst Partners has appointed Adam Valkin as a general partner in its Boston office, effective January 2013. In this role, Valkin will focus on sourcing early stage investments and working with existing companies in General Catalyst’s portfolio by using his experience to mentor young entrepreneurs. Valkin has spent the last 16 years working with early stage businesses in Europe, Israel and the US as an investor and entrepreneur. He joins General Catalyst from Accel Partners, where he was a venture partner in the firm’s London office focusing on investments in internet and mobile services. At Accel
Polaris Private Equity, a Danish/Swedish mid-market private equity investor, has made four promotions. Peter Maigaard, Rune Gornitzka and Martin Bang-Löwgren (pictured) have all been promoted to director, while Simon Wille has been promoted to investment manager. The promotions mark the end of a year during which Polaris has made five new platform investments and a further seven add-on deals, as well as securing the successful exits of Skamol and Fiskarhedenvillan. Vachet (pictured) has over 22 years of experience in operations in venture capital and in fund management, and has been part of successful teams at both Kirchner and Multiple Capital. Vachet also previously worked at Innovatech Montreal as vice president information technology and communication. In this capacity, he was responsible for 44 start-up companies and five venture capital funds. Social investor and worldwide cooperative Oikocredit has appointed David Woods as its managing director with effect from 1 January 2013. Woods’ appointment follows the pending retirement of Ben Simmes, who has been with Oikocredit for 16 years across a number of key roles. Woods has extensive international business and leadership experience, having held senior positions in the banking sector and as an advisory board member to the European Institute of Interdisciplinary Research in Paris. Samuelle Thevenet and Charlotte Metaireau have joined Activa Capital as finance director and marketing and communications manager, respectively. Thevenet, 36, previously worked for two years as company secretary at CM-CIC LBO Partners (a subsidiary of Credit Mutuel – CIC) and three years as chief financial officer at Actem Partners – Natixis Group. She was in charge of the financial and administrative management of these entities.   Metaireau, 27, worked for three years at Mazars, international audit and advisory services group, where she was successively communication officer and press relations officer.
