Law firm Baker & McKenzie has appointed London-based partner Simon Hughes as chair of the global private equity group.
Hughes (pictured) will be responsible for co-ordinating strategy for a group that acts for a wide range of sponsors, portfolio companies and management teams around the world and across all sectors.
The global private equity group comprises nearly 300 private equity lawyers across EMEA, North America, Latin America and Asia Pacific.

Ian Gobin and Deborah Poole have been appointed partners of Appleby within the funds and investment services team.
Both Gobbin (pictured) and Poole join Appleby from Walkers.
Gobin joined Appleby on 1 October 2012 and Poole, who was instrumental in starting Appleby’s London office back in 2012, will start in May 2013.
These appointments are at the core of Appleby’s focussed and strategic drive to enhance its global profile within the offshore funds world and in particular its Cayman funds offering.

UK private equity investor NBGI Private Equity has appointed David Turner as an investment manager in the firm’s UK team.
Turner (pictured) joins from Experian where he was as a member of its corporate development team. He was responsible for originating and executing acquisitions and commercial JVs across Experian’s target markets including information, marketing and financial services and technology and internet platforms.
Having qualified as an accountant with Grant Thornton in London, he transferred into its corporate finance team before moving on to goetzpartners Corporate Finance.

The Isle of Man’s Department of Economic Development has appointed John Spellman as director of financial services with immediate effect.
Colin Kniveton, chief executive officer of the Isle of Man’s Department of Economic Development, says: “John has worked with the department for a number of years in a special advisor role and going forward he will work with an increased focus on the finance sector to drive its development. He has wide experience across many financial services sub sectors and disciplines and latterly has worked with the Isle of Man Government on generating strategic opportunity for the industry.”

Alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group has appointed Joseph A Schenk, former Jefferies Group chief financial officer and most recently chief executive officer of First New York Securities, as an operating executive in the global financial services group.
Schenk will provide strategic guidance to Carlyle professionals throughout the investment process, from sourcing to acquisition to exit, and advise portfolio company executives on management, operational and growth strategies.
He joins a group of 27 senior business leaders – with an average of 40 years of experience – who serve as Carlyle operating executives across a range of industries.

Heidi de Vries, Julian Ashworth, Sheryl Dean, David Marshall, Philip Millward and Gwyneth Rees join associates Greg Barwick, Philip Dickinson, Patrick Head and Lucy Nicklas, who commenced employment in August.
Tim Clipstone, a partner in the British Virgin Islands office, started in June.

Levine Leichtman Capital Partners (LLCP), a Los Angeles based private equity firm, has appointed Lee Stern as a managing director and dedicated member of the credit strategies investment team.
Stern joins LLCP from Kohlberg, Kravis & Roberts (KKR), where he was a founding member of KKR’s private mezzanine fund.
He will be based in LLCP’s New York office and brings over 30 years of investment banking, private equity and leveraged finance experience to the team.

Franklin Square Capital Partners, a sponsor of alternative investment products, has hired John Towle as chief marketing officer.
Towle will assume his role effective immediately.
Towle comes to Franklin Square with 25 years of financial services industry experience. Most recently, he served as chief marketing officer for Resource Real Estate, a subsidiary of Resource America, and before that the chief marketing officer at Cole Real Estate Investments.
Towle also worked as director of marketing for ING Mutual Funds and held a number of marketing and sales positions at Fidelity Investments.

BlackRock has appointed James Wilkinson as European chief investment officer for the firm’s recently launched global real estate securities platform.
With over 15 years of experience in investing in real estate, Wilkinson (pictured) will be responsible for building and leading an investment team for BlackRock’s real estate securities group in Europe.
Wilkinson will join the team in January 2013 and will report to Mark Howard-Johnson, global head of the real estate securities group.
BlackRock launched the new platform in June with the appointment of Howard-Johnson and Sherry Rexroad, who joined as US chief investment officer.

Northern-based mid-market private equity firm NorthEdge Capital has appointed Phil Frame as senior investment executive based at the company’s Manchester office.
Frame (pictured) was most recently assistant director at Altium Capital for three years and previously spent four years at KPMG after graduating from The University of Manchester. He will be responsible for originating and working on the full range of target transactions across the region.
