BakerHostetler has appointed Michael D Mortenson as a partner in the firm’s litigation group.
He comes to BakerHostetler from K&L Gates.
Mortenson focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation. His experience includes representing public and private companies and individuals as both plaintiff and defendant through disputes involving the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), breach of contract, fraud and breach of fiduciary duty, misappropriation of trade secrets, employment discrimination, wrongful termination and commercial real estate matters.
Mortenson’s trial and arbitration experience in federal and state courts includes appeals to the California Courts of Appeal and the United
Arnaud Fromion and Frédéric Guilloux are joining Goodwin’s private equity practice in Paris as partners in mid-October, together with counsel Adrien Paturaud and several associates.
The group comes to Goodwin from Shearman & Sterling.
The team specialises in acquisition finance and corporate finance, acting for both lenders and borrowers, and private equity sponsors. They have represented numerous financial institutions, banks, private debt funds and borrowers on a broad range of leveraged finance transactions, including unirate bond financings. The team also acts for lenders and borrowers on large corporate, “crossover” and telecom financings.

Global advisory and fund administration firm Maitland has appointed Martina Swart to the newly created role of group head of governance services.
Swart (pictured) joins from Orbis Investment Advisory, where she was a senior adviser to the business, covering governance matters.
Previously, Swart held the position as global head of prime service legal advisory at Barclays in New York and prior to that, she held senior legal roles at major global financial institutions, including Citigroup, Citadel Investment Group and Credit Suisse.

AXA Investment Managers – Real Assets has appointed Mark Gilligan as head of infrastructure equity, effective from 3 October.
Based in London, Gilligan (pictured) will report to Ruulke Bagijn, global head of real assets private equity at AXA IM – Real Assets, and will have responsibility for the infrastructure equity team.
Gilligan has over 20 years’ experience in the infrastructure and resources sectors and joins AXA IM – Real Assets from UBS Global Asset Management where he has been since 2007. At UBS, he was head of European infrastructure and was both responsible for undertaking and managing infrastructure investments
Seyfarth Shaw has appointed Gregory A Markel as a partner in the firm’s litigation department based in New York.
Markel joins from Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft in New York.
Markel’s practice focuses on high-stakes litigation regarding securities and antitrust issues, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, and directors' and officers' defence. In addition, he handles high level internal investigations involving complex financial issues and is often retained by corporate boards of directors to handle serious internal matters.

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has appointed David Marshall as a partner in London.
Marshall joins the firm from Reynolds Porter Chamberlain where he was a partner.
He has over 15 years’ experience of advising clients on UK and cross-border private equity and venture capital transactions with a focus on acquisitions, disposals, buyouts, investments and joint ventures. He advises a wide range of clients including private equity and venture capital houses, family offices and management teams across all major industry sectors and asset classes. Law firm Goodwin has elected 15 lawyers, including London-based private equity specialist Gemma Roberts, to the partnership with effect from 1 October.
Roberts, who becomes Goodwin’s 12th partner in London, advises on private equity transactions with a particular focus on the middle market and corporate mergers and acquisitions. She represents private equity and venture funds, management teams, corporates, financial institutions and entrepreneurs. Her practice spans leveraged buyouts, corporate restructurings, management incentive schemes, as well as general corporate matters and portfolio work. She is a member of the firm’s private equity group.

Bryan, Garnier & Co, a pan-European investment bank focusing on growth companies, has appointed Gary Lilley as managing director of its European sales desk in New York.
With over 30 years of institutional equity sales experience in both London and New York, Lilley will take on the commercial follow-up of the US accounts, as well as help Bryan Garnier Securities to leverage its footprint within the institutional community.
Before joining Bryan Garnier Securities, Lilley managed the European sales desks at both UBS and Morgan Stanley, which he left in 2011 to become the head of sales at Nomura Securities.
Independent private and institutional client service provider JTC Group has appointed Dirk Oppelaar as the new managing director of its Geneva office.
In his new role, Oppelaar will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the company’s Swiss operation, in addition to acting as a key figure in the ongoing development and implementation of organisational strategy.
Raised in the Netherlands, Oppelaar qualified as a lawyer from the Free University of Amsterdam. He began his career in finance in 1995, working as legal counsel for a Luxembourg trust company focused on corporate secretarial work for blue chip corporates and private
