Alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group has appointed Rodney Cohen as a managing director and head of the new US equity opportunity team. The group will draw upon Carlyle’s geographic, product and sector resources to make control, joint-control and structured minority investments of up to USD150m across a range of industries and opportunities, including, smaller buyouts, corporate divestitures, corporate partnerships and platform build-ups. Cohen comes to Carlyle from Pegasus Capital Advisors, a middle-market investment firm with approximately USD2bn of assets under management, where he was a co-managing partner. Sheryl Schwartz, formerly a managing director at TIAA-CREF, has joined Perseus as a senior managing director working in its New York office. Schwartz will work on mezzanine debt, private equity investments and investor relations. Schwartz joined TIAA in 1988 and held a variety of positions there. She worked three years investing in corporate private placements, two years trading secondary private placements and four years investing in mortgage and asset-backed securities. Orchid Cellmark and Accipiter Capital Management have reached an agreement in connection with the nomination of candidates for election to Orchid Cellmark’s board of directors. Pursuant to the agreement, Accipiter will nominate two individuals for election to the Orchid Cellmark board. Such nominees will serve as class I directors of the company with three-year terms ending in 2013. Orchid Cellmark’s 2010 annual meeting of stockholders is scheduled for 9 November 2010. Brookfield Asset Management has appointed Chris Harris as client relations manager for the private funds group. Harris will be responsible for Brookfield’s relationships with investors in the western US. Prior to his appointment, Harris served a director in the private placement team at Macquarie Capital for three years, working on development of new funds and overseeing client investments in real estate, private equity and infrastructure. Bechtel joins as the firm’s third principal, along with Keith Mitchell and Roger Hartley. Previously, Bechtel was senior vice president at Jefferies’ financial institutions group, leading the firm’s asset management investment banking efforts in the western US.
